Delhi, the present capital
of India, is located in the northern part of the country. The city is
beautified by the blue waters of river Yamuna flowing beside. The history
of the city is as old as the epic Mahabharata. The town was known as Indraprastha,
where Pandavas used to live, near about 5000 years ago. In due course
eight more cities came alive adjacent to Indraprastha: Lal Kot, Siri, Dinpanah,
Quila Rai Pithora, Ferozabad, Jahanpanah, Tughlakabad and Shahjahanabad.
Kolkata, known as "cultural capital of
India" and present capital of West Bengal, was also the former capital of
India during the British era. This city is located at the eastern part of
India. The holy waters of river Ganga makes the atmosphere of the city very
much pleasant and pious. Before Job Charnok named it as Calcutta, the village
was with the name of Kalikata(kali- kshetra or area of hindu goddess Kali).
Purana describes that Kalighat which is situated in Kolkata is the 41st shakti
peeth. It is believed that Sati Devi's Right Toes fell in
Kalighat Shrine. From then Devi Sati is prayed here in form of goddess Kali and
so the name became Kalikata. Previously Kalikata was comprised of two more
villages, namely Sutanuti & Gobindapur.
Chennai formerly known as Madras, is the capital of the state of Tamil
Nadu and is India's fourth largest city. It is located on the Coromandel Coast
of the Bay of Bengal. The 400-year-old city is the 31st largest metropolitan
area in the world. Chennai, originally known as "Madraspatnam"
was located in the province of Tondaimandalam, an area lying between Pennar
river of Nellore and the Pennar river of Cuddalore. The capital of the province
was Kancheepuram. The modern city of "Chennai" arose from
the British settlement of Fort St. George and its subsequent expansion through
merging numerous native villages and European settlements around Fort St.
George into the city of Madras. While most of the original city of Madras was
built and settled by Europeans, the surrounding area which was later
incorporated included the native temples of Thiruvanmiyur, Thiruvotriyur,
Thiruvallikeni (Triplicane), Thirumayilai (Mylapore) which have existed for
more than 1000 years.
Mumbai formerly known as
Bombay, is the capital of Maharashtra. It is located on west coast of India
beside the Arabian sea and the city has a deep natural harbour. The city
of Bombay originally consisted of seven islands, namely Colaba, Mazagaon, Old
Woman's Island, Wadala, Mahim, Parel, and Matunga-Sion. This group of islands,
which have since been joined together by a series of reclamations, formed part
of the kingdom of Ashoka, the famous Emperor of India. After his
death, these islands passed into the hands of various Hindu rulers until 1343.
In that year, the Mohammedans of Gujerat took possession and the Kings of that
province of India ruled for the next two centuries. The only vestige (mark) of
their dominion over these islands that remains today is the mosque at
Mahim. In 1534 the Portuguese, who already possessed many important
trading centers on the western coast, such as Panjim, Daman, and Diu, took
Bombay by force of arms from the Mohammedans. "Kolis" the group
of fishermen were the original inhabitants of the place. they used to call the
place as "mumba" after the name of hindu goddess MumbaDevi.
